Stellaluna
Stellaluna is a narrative written and illustrated by Janell Cannon. Stellaluna is an entertaining story about a mother bat that loses her child from an unexpected attack from an owl. The baby bat that is called Stellaluna falls down and down until she reaches a birds nest, where she finds 3 chicks and makes friends with them…..but there is a problem…she’s a bat and they’re birds.
The author used fantastic descriptions, amazing onomatopoeia, punctuations and great illustrations. The amazing descriptions are great because they help to visualise what is happening. For
example the author stated 'the powerful bird swooped’. Also the onomatopoeia is an exciting language feature because it stands out in the story which the children will enjoy. As it says in the story ‘flump!’ The punctuation is also good because it uses various types of marks such as ‘How Embarrassing!’The illustrations tell a story of their own with amazing life-like colours and shapes that children will adore!
Stellaluna is the main character of this story and she is scared because she lost Mother Bat. Flap, Flitter and pip are
three birds who are confident and love trying out new things like when they try to hang upside down by their feet like Stellaluna. Mother Bat is a caring mother who loves her daughter and tries to find her. Mama Bird is a strict who doesn’t let Stellaluna in the nest unless she stops being a bat.
The Moral of this story is that ‘No matter what you are, you can still be friends ‘this is proved by Stellaluna who, even
though she is a bat she is still friends with the three birds.
This book is recommended for children under 10 as it is a family story and for kids who like animals.
