the paper bag princess by robert munsch and michael martchenko
The Paper Bag Princess is about a young, beautiful princess named Elizabeth, who is going to marry Prince Ronald. The most handsome prince in the world. However, her castle has been demolished by a fearsome, ferocious, fiery dragon. All of her clothes are burnt and the only thing she has left to wear is a paper bag. She chases the dragon down to get the prince back.
The main characters in the Paper Bag Princess are Princess Elizabeth, Prince Ronald and The Dragon. Princess Elizabeth is intelligent, brave and pretty. She is intelligent because she outwits the dragon, brave because she has courage to stand up to the dragon and she is beautiful because in the text it says, “She is beautiful.” Prince Ronald
is very conceited; however, he is very handsome. He is conceited because he cares too much about how he looks. The dragon is easily fooled because he fell for Princess Elizabeth’s tricks.
What makes the Paper Bag Princess good are the spectacular language features, long sentences and illustrations. The size of the font makes it easier for children to read. The long sentences help to make the story longer and more enjoyable for children to read. The descriptions help the reader visualise what’s happening.
The moral of The Paper Bag Princess is that, it doesn’t matter about looks; it matters about your personality. Also that you should stay true to who you are. For example in the story Prince Ronald only cares how Elizabeth looks.
We recommend this book for children who are five years and up, or for parents to read this book to their child. This type of text is for children who like an adventurous dragon story!
